Mike Judge Has Seen the Future: A Cautionary Tale
About six months ago, I finally got around to watching Mike Judge's latest film, "Idiocracy". It was outrageous, it dragged in lots of places but in light of the current election decisions we have to make, I'd recommend that you watch it. I recommend it in particular for anyone who is considering voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. The overall message of the film is that America is headed down a road where at some point in the future we will have destroyed our country. We will have elected so many "Joe Six-Packs" as president, and we will have devalued education so much, and the smartest people in the country will choose not to have children that we will become a nation of idiots speaking in a language that is gibberish and calling people who actually speak proper English, "gay". A nation where we've destroyed our environment, elected a cool rapper as president and watered our crops with sports drinks. Sounds crazy, right? Maybe not. Look at the last eight years. We elected a guy solely based on our feelings that we'd like to have a beer with him. We are on the road to becoming idiots and some of us are further along that road than others.
Take this current election. We have a ticket that includes a woman with a less than stellar education, complete confidence that she knows everything she needs to know and has never been wrong - a hockey mom that could be your next door neighbor and who understands what it's like to have children and work. Look at your next door neighbor and tell me that you would seriously want that person to be a heartbeat away from the presidency... really? I actually saw a hockey Mom on CNN say that because Sarah Palin has five kids, is a hockey mom and knows what that is like that she is qualified to run the free world. When the CNN reporter asked the woman, "Does that mean that you could be President?". The woman actually said yes with a straight face. Have we lost our minds? Are we so self-absorbed and been so brainwashed into thinking we can do anything that the average person on the street really believes they are qualified to be President?
Some people will accuse me of being an elitist with this statement and I don't care. We need more elitists in this country. Contrary to idiotic belief, elite is not a bad word. I want the leader of the free world to be better than me. I want them to have an Ivy League education. I want them to have travelled the world. I do not want to look at the President or Vice President of the United States and think to myself, "hey, I could do that". What is happening in our country? I am all for telling our children that in this country they can be anything they set their mind to. And, I believe it. But in the small town, blue collar household I grew up in, my parents qualified that statement with "as long as you work hard and get a good education". And I think there are a lot of people out there who received that same message. You can't be anything you want to be by just wishing it, or being pretty or saying clever things. You have to work at it and you have to travel a road that actually leads to where you want to go.
In so many elections, the VP candidate hasn't mattered. In this election. It matters. John McCain is an old man. If you look at the actuarial science on aging and death, you'll find that the odds are decent he could die in office and Sarah Palin would be president. That is so terrifying to me that I am losing sleep worrying they may be elected. And I keep finding the images from Mike Judge's film running through my mind. I'm actually finding those images plausible. And believe me, that's terrifying. Which is why I want McCain/Palin supporters or potential supporters to watch the movie. Maybe it won't change anyone's mind. Maybe they are so blind to the truth that nothing will make them see the error of their ways. Maybe we already are a nation of idiots and there's no way to change our destiny. Maybe Mike Judge has seen the future. And just maybe that future is already here.
